Between winter’s long stretch and moments of reflection, February offers space to care for the places around us, the stories we carry, and the routines that support our well-being. Below are a few ways we’re marking February through environmental stewardship, cultural reflection, and everyday practices that feel both thoughtful and attainable.
World Wetlands Day recognizes one of the most powerful ecosystems on the planet.
Wetlands act as natural filters, improving water quality by trapping pollutants and sediment. They absorb excess water, reducing flooding and erosion, store carbon that would otherwise contribute to climate change, and provide essential habitat for birds, fish, and countless other species. Yet globally, wetlands are disappearing faster than many other ecosystems.
This vulnerability underscores the importance of restoration and preservation. By restoring native vegetation and hydrology, these efforts strengthen shoreline resilience, support biodiversity, and improve the long-term health of the surrounding landscape.
At the Ford House, restoring the wetlands already on our property reflects a commitment to caring for the ecosystems we are directly connected to.
Protecting wetlands isn’t just an environmental issue, it’s a stewardship responsibility.
Black history isn’t just something we look back on, it’s part of the world we move through collectively every day. This month offers space to learn, reflect, and simply spend time with the stories and contributions that have shaped so much of American life.
